Sept/Oct/Nov Earnings From Amazon Case Study

I will like to bring you up to date with a case study, I started way back in August using the UK Amazon Affiliate program and Google Adwords to drive traffic to their sales pages for specific products. For the month of September, my total earnings where £502.75 ($1000) on a Google Ad spend of $1,635.33. So I effectively lost around $635 from promoting producting products using the Amazon UK affiliate program for the month of September. During October, I fared a little better by earning £315.95 ($630) on a Google ad spend of $702.97. And in November, I fared much better by earning £57.62($114) on an Google Ad spend of $34.59. So even though overall, I have made a loss over the three months, I have finally managed to turn around my losses in the first couple of months to a profit in November. The December month is always interesting with the run up to Xmas so I will be back with an update in the New Year.

Amazon Case Study Update

At the beginning of this month, I blogged about an experiment I was about to start using the UK Amazon Affiliate and Google Adwords. Having lost some money last month in a bidding war with another affiliate, I began this month very cautious in regards to what products I was going to promote and how much I will be spending on Adwords to promote those products. I must say that I have some very interesting statistics and so far I should at least break even or even make a small profit.

This month I have targeted products that have proved popular in the media and have also looked at one or two products that Amazon shoppers could preorder. I have kept a spreadsheet of my adwords spend, what I have earned and how many items have been ordered and finally how many items have been dispatched.

I would not reveal what I have promoted so as not to allow my fellow affiliates who might read this to zoom in on what I am promoting. However, I have promoted books, cds, video games and consoles, digital cameras and much more. However what has amazed me is the additional products that I didn’t promote but which have been ordered through my links by Amazon shoppers. So far, as you can see from the picture below :-

I have generated a whopping £3892.10 in revenue for Amazon.co.uk and made £256.00 in referral fees on 223 dispatched items. My Google Adwords spend so far this month is $948.75. I have had 303 items ordered through my links so as you can see I still have an outstanding 80 items that Amazon.co.uk would still need to dispatch to customers that have ordered items. I am not sure how many of the outstanding items will actually be shipped out to customers but I assume most of them will. Something else I have noticed in my Amazon reports is that my earnings continue to be adjusted upwards.

This might be due to the fact that some outstanding items get shipped and get added to the specific days they were bought. I pay for my Google Adwords in $$$ to take advantage of the exchange rate so effectively I would like to think I am getting my Google Adwords advertising for half what it would cost me if I was to buy it in £££. So thats the update and I will be back with another one at the end of the month. Overall, I will like to select more products to promote and lower my Adwords spend. Also I am looking to track my most profitable keywords.

In the meantime if you would like to know about the report that inspired me to do this experiment then check out Jay Simpson’s Dominating Amazon. At $7 it will cost you less than the price of a Big Mac Meal and you even have the opportunity to sell it on and pocket 100% commission on any sales you might make.

Dominating Amazon Case Study

Yesterday, I reviewed Jay Simpson’s Dominating Amazon ebook and mentioned that after reading the ebook I started promoting Amazon products as an affiliate. My first month has been a steep learning curve and I must say that I lost some money promoting Amazon products. I started the campaign around the last week of August and managed to spend $361.23 all together on my Google Adwords campaigns and made £20.21 in commissions on £443.78 sales in my first month as shown in the pic below.

So Amazon paid me 4.55% in commission which is just about right. I had 500 clicks and 7 Ordered items. 4 Items were dispatched and I am guessing the other 3 ordered items might have been cancelled. Not sure to be honest but the items haven’t showed up on my stats for this month.

You might be wondering why I spent so much in Google Adwords. Well I was promoting a brand new Xbox 360 product that came out on the last Thursday of the month and my ad got clicked on so many times. To make matters worse my campaign got nuked by another affiliate. This basically means another affiliate used sneaky techniques to find out what I was bidding on, then copied my ad and changed it a bit and outbid me in the process.

As Google only allows 1 ad to show from any one merchant, in this case Amazon, my ad disappeared because I was outbid. I then stupidly decide to go into a bidding war with the fellow culprit and your guess in as good as mine as to what happened next. We were both bidding crazy amounts to get a good spot in the sponsored listings and my ad costs just skyrocked. I have since got rid of the campaign because it was just costing me money. I managed to sell 2 Xbox 360 consoles even though only one was dispatched. You only get commissions on any items that are dispatched. So what did I learn from this expensive experiment? Never go into a bidding war with a fellow advertiser because there is only one winner and that is Google.

Has my expensive mistake put my off Adwords? Not really. I have a few more campaigns running and I am tracking my daily spend on each campaign down to which keywords are making me money. Most importantly, I am checking what is being ordered and also what’s be dispatched to see if I can cull back some of those mega loses.

Watch this space for an update.

Dominating Amazon Review

DominatingAmazonI started an affiliate marketing experiment last month after buying Jay Simpson’s DominatingAmazon ebook.

Having just completed a Google Adwords set of e-classes with a good online friend Greg Cesar, I wanted to put what I had learnt into practice. The information that Jay Simpson provided about dominating Amazon.co.uk using his quick and easy system provide me with a good platform to test what I had learnt about Google Adwords.

Anyway you might be wondering what Jay Simpson’s Dominating Amazon is all about. Well his 57 page ebook which retails for $7 explains how to earn money from the Amazon.co.uk affiliate program using Google Adwords to market different different Amazon products. The book is geared towards Amazon.co.uk because Jay Simpson believes the US market is more or less saturated with affiliates trying to make a quick buck.

It is a well known fact that a lot of affiliates don’t bother with Amazon.co.uk because of their very low commissions and Jay Simpson emphasises this point, however because Amazon is a well known and trusted brand, the average consumer is much more likely to trust Amazon and hence buy products from them. With fewer affiliates competing against you, this might work in your favour because you are spoilt for chose in the range of products to promote. Whilst most affiliates are rushing to promote Clickbank products with far better commission, you can easily see why dominating Amazon could just become a reality.

I list below some aspects of the his report that I like :-

  • A clear set of instructions how to join the Amazon UK Affiliate program.
  • The Amazon.uk commission structure and how to get your commission rates up quickly.
  • Selecting Products to sell that will bring in the profits.
  • Creating a campaign in Google Adwords, writing your Adwords Ad and choosing keywords
  • And finally what to do when your campaign is up and running.

The ebook will surely both new and experience affiliate marketers that want to add to internet streams of income. And one last thing is you get to promote the ebook to your friends, list and get 100% of the sales you make. Now how good is that.

Watch out for an update on my affliliate marketing experiment using Jay Simpson’s Dominating Amazon ebook in subsequent posts.
